TIME ZONE CONVERTER

What time is it there?

Pick the time and the two time zones, get the converted time instantly.

What time is it in Los Angeles when it is noon in New York?

9:00 AM. Pacific time is 3 hours behind Eastern all year, because both switch to daylight saving time on the same days. Chicago is 1 hour behind New York and Denver 2.

When does daylight saving time start and end?

In the US it starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November — March 8 and November 1 in 2026. Arizona (outside the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii stay on standard time all year.

Why is London sometimes 4 hours ahead of New York instead of 5?

Europe changes its clocks on the last Sundays of March and October, a few weeks apart from the US. From October 25 to November 1, 2026, London is back on GMT while New York is still on daylight time, so noon in New York is 4:00 PM in London, not 5:00.

What is UTC?

Coordinated Universal Time, the world's reference clock, with no daylight saving time. Eastern time is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer; India is UTC+5:30 all year.

Does the converter know my time zone?

Yes — "Your time zone" uses your device's setting. The converter runs in your browser with its built-in time zone database, so it knows each zone's daylight saving dates.

Why is a meeting at 9:00 AM New York different from London in March and October?

Because the two regions change clocks on different dates. On October 28, 2026, London is on GMT (UTC+0) and New York on daylight time (UTC−4), so 9:00 AM in New York is 1:00 PM in London, a gap of 4 hours. On March 15, 2026, the US is already on daylight time while London is still on GMT, and the gap is again 4 hours (1:00 PM in London); in the rest of the year it is 5 hours.

What happens to a time that does not exist when the clocks spring forward?

On the spring-forward day, clocks jump from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM in the US, so 2:30 AM does not exist that night; in autumn the 1:00 hour happens twice. A converter has to pick one interpretation for such times. For scheduling, avoid times in the hour of the change, or state the time in UTC.

How a conversion is done

The converter first finds the offset from UTC that applies in the starting zone at the date and time you enter, which turns the local time into an exact moment. It then finds the offset that applies in the target zone at that same moment and adds it. The offsets come from the time zone database built into your browser, which records each region's daylight saving rules by date, and that is why the answer can differ between January and July. The result also carries the date, because the target may already be on the next day or still on the day before. Each zone is named by a place (America/New_York) rather than an abbreviation to avoid ambiguity.

Worked example: 9:00 AM in New York on October 28, 2026

The same moment is 6:00 AM in Los Angeles, 1:00 PM in London, 6:30 PM in India, 10:00 PM in Tokyo and 12:00 AM (day 29) in Sydney. India is UTC+5:30 all year, so its clock sits on the half hour. Sydney is on daylight saving time from October, which is why it is 11 hours ahead of UTC then (UTC+11) and not 10. The same table on a day in July would show different gaps for London and Sydney.

Scheduling across zones

Pick the date first, because a conversion is only valid for a specific date. If people are in more than two places, compare all of them with UTC, which has no daylight saving time. A meeting set in one zone's local time shifts relative to others when only one of them changes its clocks. For recurring meetings, check the dates around the March and October changes, and give the time zone in the invitation as a place or as UTC, not as "EST", which people read differently.

Common mistakes

Using abbreviations is the first: "CST" is used for US Central, China and Cuba standard times, and "EST" is wrong in summer in the US, when the zone is on daylight time. Assuming the difference between two cities is constant is the second; it changes whenever one of them changes its clocks. Forgetting the date line is a third: Tokyo or Sydney may already be on tomorrow's date when New York is still on today's. The New York to London gap is 5 hours until the US changes its clocks on March 8, 2026, then 4 hours until the UK changes on March 29.
