How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?
Multiply by the hours you work in a year: 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $52,000 a year before taxes.
How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
Divide by the hours: $60,000 ÷ 2,080 = $28.85 an hour.
What is a quick way to estimate?
Double the hourly rate and add three zeros: $25 an hour ≈ $50,000 a year. It uses 2,000 hours, a bit under a full-time 2,080.
Biweekly or semimonthly — what is the difference?
Biweekly is every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year; semimonthly is twice a month — 24. On $52,000 that is $2,000 versus $2,166.67 per paycheck.
Is this take-home pay?
No — these are gross figures before taxes, insurance and retirement contributions. Your pay stub shows the net amount.
Why do federal pay tables use 2,087 hours instead of 2,080?
OPM explains that before 1984 federal hourly pay was figured by dividing annual pay by 2,080, which assumes 52 weeks of 40 hours and leaves out the extra day or two in a 365- or 366-day year. Congress made the 2,087-hour divisor permanent in 1985; OPM derives it from the average number of working hours in a year over the calendar’s 28-year cycle, about 2,087.14, rounded. On $60,000 the federal hourly rate is $28.75, compared with $28.85 at 2,080 hours.
How is overtime pay figured?
Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, covered employees must be paid at least one and one-half times the regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek, according to the Department of Labor. At $25 an hour, 45 hours in one week pays 40 × $25 + 5 × $37.50 = $1,187.50. The calculator does not add overtime; enter your regular hours.
How the conversion works
The calculator first finds the yearly pay, then divides it into every period. For an hourly wage, yearly pay = rate × hours per week × weeks per year. The hourly rate is the yearly pay divided by hours × weeks. Biweekly pay is yearly pay ÷ 26, semimonthly is ÷ 24 and monthly is ÷ 12. The weekly line divides by the weeks you entered, so it shows pay for a worked week.
Worked example: $25 an hour
$25 × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000 a year. That is $4,333.33 a month, $2,000 per biweekly paycheck and $2,166.67 per semimonthly one. The other direction: $60,000 a year ÷ 2,080 hours is $28.85 an hour. Weeks matter: if you are paid for only 50 weeks, $25 an hour is $50,000 a year, not $52,000, because two weeks without pay remove $2,000.
Common mistakes
Assuming 2,080 hours for a job with unpaid time off, a seasonal schedule or part-time hours produces the wrong yearly total, so change the hours and weeks to match the job. Treating a monthly figure as four weeks is another: a year has 52 weeks, so a month is about 4.33 weeks, and multiplying weekly pay by four counts 48 weeks of pay instead of 52. Comparing a salary with an hourly offer without counting paid holidays, unpaid lunch or overtime rules is a third. And remember that the results are gross: they do not subtract tax, so the paycheck will be smaller.
