When is the Islamic New Year 2026?
The Islamic year 1448 AH begins with 1 Muharram, which the Umm al-Qura calendar puts on Tuesday, June 16, 2026. Saudi Arabia confirmed June 16 as the first day of Muharram 1448, as reported by Arabian Business. The arithmetic (tabular) calendar gives Wednesday, June 17, 2026, a day later. Islamic days begin at sundown, so the evening before is the start of the day.
When did Ramadan 2026 start?
Ramadan 1447 AH began on Feb 18, 2026 in the tabular calendar and in the Umm al-Qura calendar, and the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia declared February 18, 2026 as its first day after a crescent sighting report (Saudi Press Agency, February 17, 2026). Some countries began on February 19, so the date was not the same everywhere. Ramadan 1448 AH is expected on about Feb 8, 2027.
Why can the result be a day or two off?
Real Islamic months begin when the new crescent is sighted or, in some countries, by a rule based on astronomical calculation, and a month is 29 or 30 days depending on that. The tabular calendar instead alternates 30 and 29 days with a fixed pattern, so it drifts from the Moon by up to about two days. The converter shows the Umm al-Qura date beside it; neither is a religious ruling.
What is the tabular Islamic calendar?
A rule-based calendar with a 30-year cycle: 19 years of 354 days and 11 leap years of 355 days (years 2, 5, 7, 10, 13, 16, 18, 21, 24, 26, 29 of the cycle). Odd months have 30 days, even months 29, and Dhu al-Hijjah gets a 30th day in a leap year. Its year 1 begins on Jul 19, 622 in the proleptic Gregorian calendar (Friday, July 16, 622 in the Julian calendar, the civil epoch; some references use Thursday, July 15, the astronomical epoch, which shifts every date by one day).
Why is the Islamic year about 11 days shorter?
Twelve lunar months last about 354.37 days, not 365.24, and the calendar has no leap month to catch up with the seasons. So Ramadan moves earlier by roughly 10 to 11 days each Gregorian year and passes through every season in about 33 years.
Can I use this to schedule Eid or Hajj?
Use it for planning and for ordinary dates such as a document's Hijri date. For prayers, fasting, Eid and Hajj, follow the announcement of your local religious authority or mosque, which may depend on moon sighting in your country.
How the conversion works
The calendar is turned into a count of days since its epoch. Year y starts (y − 1) × 354 days after the epoch plus one extra day for each leap year before it, which is floor((3 + 11y) ÷ 30); a month m starts 29 × (m − 1) + floor(m ÷ 2) days into the year. Gregorian dates are converted through the same day count, so the formula needs no tables. A year is a leap year when (14 + 11y) mod 30 < 11. Example: October 28, 2026 comes out as 16 Jumada al-awwal 1448 AH, and 1 Muharram 1448 is Jun 17, 2026 by the tabular rule and Jun 16, 2026 by Umm al-Qura (1447 AH began Jun 27, 2025 and Jun 26, 2025 respectively).
Tabular versus Umm al-Qura
The Umm al-Qura calendar is the official civil calendar of Saudi Arabia, calculated from the Moon's position at Mecca in advance. The converter reads your browser's own Umm al-Qura data (the "islamic-umalqura" calendar of the JavaScript Intl API). Across the first days of all 1212 months of 1400–1500 AH, the two calendars agree on 57% of them; the tabular date is one day later on 36%, two days later on 1% and one day earlier on 6%. Which one matches what your community does depends on its method.
Limits of the tabular calendar
Do not take a tabular date as the start of Ramadan, Eid or Hajj: the Royal Court of Saudi Arabia, many countries' moon-sighting committees and some Muslim organizations decide by sighting or by their own calculation, and the announced date often differs from the table. The Umm al-Qura data in a browser covers roughly the years 1300–1600 AH (about 1882–2174 CE); outside that range the comparison column shows a dash. The tabular result is a Gregorian-to-Hijri mapping only; it does not know your location or the time of day, which is why the converter asks whether you are before or after sundown.
