How many acres is it?

Enter your lot or field of any shape, get acres and the price per acre instantly.

How do I calculate acreage?

Multiply the length by the width in feet and divide by 43,560, the square feet in an acre. A 100 by 200 ft lot is 20,000 square feet, and 20,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.459 acres — a little less than half an acre.

How big is an acre?

An acre is 43,560 square feet — 4,840 square yards or 4,046.9 square meters. As a square it would be about 208.7 ft on each side. A US football field with both end zones, 360 by 160 ft, is 57,600 square feet, or 1.32 acres.

How many acres are in a square mile and in a hectare?

A square mile is 5,280 × 5,280 = 27,878,400 square feet, which is exactly 640 acres. A hectare is 10,000 square meters, or 2.471 acres; one acre is 0.405 hectares.

How do I measure an irregular lot?

Split it into rectangles and triangles, measure each, and add them with + Add another parcel — a triangle is base × height ÷ 2. The most exact figure is on your deed, plat or survey, which list the lot area.

How do I work out the price per acre?

Divide the price by the acreage. A 2.5 acre parcel listed at $50,000 is $50,000 ÷ 2.5 = $20,000 per acre. Enter a price per acre in the table under the result to go the other way — from the price per acre to the total.

How many acres is a quarter section?

A section of land in the US Public Land Survey System is one square mile, or 640 acres. A quarter section is 160 acres, a quarter of a quarter section is 40 acres, and a 40-acre square is 1,320 feet on a side.

Is acreage measured on the slope or on a flat plan?

Deeds and surveys normally give the area of the lot projected onto a horizontal plane, as on a map. A steep hillside has more actual ground surface than its acreage suggests, which matters for things like seeding or sod but not for the legal size.

How many acres is 10,000 square feet?

10,000 ÷ 43,560 = 0.23 acres, a little under a quarter of an acre. Going the other way, a quarter acre is 10,890 square feet.

How the calculation works

The calculator turns every part of the lot into square feet, adds the parts together and divides by 43,560. The acre is defined as 43,560 square feet, which is 4,840 square yards or exactly 4,046.8564224 square meters, and a hectare is 10,000 square meters. A rectangle is length times width, a triangle is base times height divided by two, and a circle is π times radius squared. When you enter measurements in meters, the calculator converts through square meters: 1 square foot is 0.09290304 square meters exactly, because the international foot is defined as 0.3048 meters.

Worked example

Suppose a lot is a 150 ft by 200 ft rectangle with a triangular strip along one side that has a 150 ft base and is 80 ft high. The rectangle is 30,000 square feet and the triangle is 150 × 80 ÷ 2 = 6,000 square feet, so the lot is 36,000 square feet in total. Dividing by 43,560 gives 0.826 acres. In metric units that is 3,345 square meters, or 0.334 hectares. At an asking price of $18,000 per acre, the parcel would cost about $14,876.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing by the wrong number. 43,560 applies only to square feet. If you measured in yards, divide the area in square yards by 4,840. Mixing feet and yards in one multiplication is the usual source of answers that are off by a factor of nine.
  • Treating a rough shape as a rectangle. A lot that narrows at the back is not length times the widest width. Split it into a rectangle and a triangle, or into several parts, as in the example above.
  • Trusting a measured figure over the deed. Tape or app measurements are good for planning, but boundaries, easements and road frontage are legal facts. When the deed or survey disagrees with your estimate, the survey is the document that counts.
